Air India has agreed major deals with manufacturers Boeing and Airbus that could eventually see the delivery of more than 500 aircraft.
The airline, which was acquired by Indian conglomerate Tata Sons in early 2022, has ordered 190 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, as well as 20 B787 Dreamliners and 10 B777Xs.
Air India also has secured further options for another 50 B737 MAXs and 20 Dreamliners as part of the new agreement.
In a separate deal, Air India has ordered 250 aircraft from European manufacturer Airbus, including 140 A320neo and 70 A321neo aircraft, as well as 40 A350 long-haul jets. The first A350-900 due to arrive in late 2023.
Campbell Wilson, CEO and managing director of Air India, said: “These new airplanes will enable us to dramatically expand our network, both domestically and internationally.”
The airline is already increasing its flights into Europe, including new services from both London Heathrow and Gatwick this year.
Air India is set to merge with rival Indian carrier Vistara, which is a partnership between Tata and Singapore Airlines, after a deal was announced in November 2022.
